The US divisions organised under the light division structure, such as the 82nd Airborne, had one reconnaissance squadron with one light cavalry troop mounted in wheeled vehicles. These had initially been jeeps, but by 1985 had been replaced by the new High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), 'Humvee' or 'Hummer' as it quickly became known to the troops.
Each troop had three variants of the HMMWV armaments carrier available, 14 with .50 cal machine-guns or 40mm Mk 19 grenade launchers, and eight mounting Improved TOW anti-tank missiles. A light cavalry troop is organised into six scout sections of four HMMWV vehicles, one armed with a M2 .50 cal machine-gun, one with a 40mm Mk19 grenade launcher and one or two with ITOW launchers. The excellent mobility of the HMMWV vehicle proved them ideal scouts.
