The US Marine Corps adopted the British Hawker-Siddley Harrier, the famed 'Jump Jet', in 1971. Designated AV-8, the Harrier is a high-performance jet aircraft that is uniquely capable of vertical and short take-off and landing (VSTOL). It does this by swivelling its exhaust nozzles down to allow it to take off vertically.
The Marines can operate their Harriers from aircraft carriers as well as light assault ships. Once inland the Harriers operate from forward bases, containing one to four aircraft, located 20 miles (32 km) from the front, while a more established airbase would be located around 50 miles (80 km) from the front. The forward bases allow for a far greater sortie rate and reduced fuel consumption.
Armed with an electrically-powered 30mm Aden 5-chamber revolver cannon and CBU-100 cluster bombs, the Harrier can deal with both air and ground targets.
